The Riverside Walkway

Imagine a beautiful riverside path connecting Bridge Street to Hermitage Road, lined with flowers and offering stunning views of St Mary’s Church. Action Hitchin's vision and aspiration to work in collaboration with North Herts Council's existing Riverside project, is to make this vision a reality with our Riverside Walkway Scheme, creating a peaceful and accessible route for residents and visitors to enjoy. The scheme includes a new footbridge constructed by North Herts Council, connecting Hermitage Road to Bridge Street and making more of our ancient caulk streams and local wildlife.

What’s the Plan?

This ambitious project aims to transform the riverside area into a vibrant, attractive space that enhances Hitchin’s natural beauty. Key elements of the scheme include:

  • Flower Planting: Adding colourful blooms along the pathway to create a welcoming and picturesque environment.

  • Pathway Development: Constructing a clear, accessible walkway to ensure the route is easy to navigate for everyone.

  • A New Bridge: Building a footbridge to link Bridge Street and Hermitage Road, making it easier for pedestrians to move between these two key areas.

  • Stunning Views: Highlighting the historic beauty of St Mary’s Church as part of the walkway, creating a unique spot for reflection and photography.

Why This Matters

The Riverside Walkway Scheme will provide:

  • A New Experience for Residents and Visitors: Offering a peaceful route for walking, jogging, or simply enjoying the outdoors.

  • Improved Access: Making it easier to connect key parts of the town on foot.

  • Environmental Benefits: Planting flowers and enhancing green spaces to boost biodiversity and create a cleaner, greener Hitchin.

  • Cultural Appreciation: Highlighting the beauty of St Mary’s Church and its surroundings, enhancing pride in Hitchin’s heritage.

How You Can Help

This project will only be possible with the support of the local community. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Donate: Your contributions will help fund the pathway, bridge construction, and flower planting.

  • Share Your Ideas: If you have suggestions for how the walkway could be even better, let us know.

  • Spread the Word: Help us raise awareness and encourage others to support this exciting project.

The Riverside Walkway Scheme is about more than just improving access – it’s about creating a space where people can connect with nature, enjoy the town’s heritage, and feel proud to call Hitchin home.
