Charnwood House
Charnwood House has long been an important part of Hitchin’s heritage. Originally gifted to the council by a local family for community use, it later became the home of the much-loved Hitchin Museum. When the museum moved to its new premises on Brand Street, Charnwood House continued to play a role by housing items from the museum's collection.
Today, we have a unique opportunity to give this historic building a new purpose by transforming it into a lively community space - somewhere that supports local people and brings the community together.

A New Chapter for Charnwood House
Action Hitchin hopes to work in collaboration with North Herts Council which has already allocated a budget to begin developing the project. While this commitment is an encouraging start, further support will be needed to fully realise the vision of turning Charnwood House into a thriving community hub.

Our aim is to create a welcoming space for everyone – a place for workshops, events, classes, and community activities. From art exhibitions and fitness sessions to group meetings and social gatherings, Charnwood House has the potential to become a central part of everyday life in Hitchn.

Why This Project Matters
A revitalised Charnwood House could bring many benefits to the town:
-
Strengthening Community Connections: Providing a friendly place for people of all ages to meet, learn, and share experiences.
-
Supporting Local Groups: Offering affordable space for clubs, classes, organisations and community activities.
-
Preserve and celebrate Local Heritage: Respecting the history of Charnwood House while giving it a meaningful role for the future.
-
Improving Wellbeing: Creating opportunities for social interaction, creativity and personal development.

By operating the facility as a charity, we can ensure that it remains accessible, affordable, and shaped around the needs of the Hitchin community.
